By Orla Murphy
Orla Murphy conducted extensive research into the 15 Kilkenny men who were interned in Ballykinlar Co Down, using various sources including Tom Nolan’s autograph book from Kilkenny Archaeological Society’s collections.
Ballykinlar was the first and the largest internment camp opened in Ireland during the War of Independence. It opened in early December 1920, and at one stage held almost 2,000 internees, from every county in Ireland.
Most of the 15 Kilkenny men spent a full year in Ballykinlar, and were released only after the Treaty was signed.
